Second Quarter Assignments
5-6 November: In class Protist Lab (25 Points). Students are graded on their performance, and sketching the protists they see under their microscopes. Students have been making their own wet mount slides and looking at and observing the behavior of live plant-like and animal-like protists using high school microscopes.
14-15 November: 7th Grade Science Chapter 3 Exam (164 points). Students will be tested on the three sections in Chapter 3 (Cell Structure, Viewing Cells, and Viruses). Students were given a study guide on 6-7 November that contained the most important concepts they have been learning over the last 3 weeks. Click here to see the study guide. Students were encouraged to review questions from the Homework Assignments #4, #5, and #6 on Quia.com that they have already completed and study them as I will take all my questions on the test from the homework assignments. Students will take the test in class on www.quia.com/web.

Students will be using the Scientific Method to explore how a Semi-Permeable Membrane works (cell membranes), and how materials and substances move into and out of the cell (150 points - 50 points for lab performance, and 50 points for writing portion of the lab using their Science Journal and the Scientific Method. Click here for the lab guidelines. Students will collect their data in a data table and graph their data. They will then analyze it and make their conclusions. 15-23 January EXTRA CREDIT: 7th Grade Science Extra Credit Assignment (end of 2nd Quarter)
For this assignment you will need to create a poster about Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) to include the following:
1. First: Draw, color, Label, and describe the four base pairs: What are the four base pairs? Name and describe them. Draw their structure.
2. Second: Draw, color, and label the structure of the double helix. Label the parts and identify the base pairs.
3. Third: Write a one page essay about what DNA is, and all the important things you learn in your research about DNA. Must be typed and double spaced.

9 January - 15 February: Plant Hormones and Tropisms Lab. Students will conduct and experiment in the lab by taking direct measurements and collecting data on plant growth. Focus of the lab is to help students understand plant responses to their environment, tropisms, and the types of plant hormones that effect growth. Students will collect data and make observations and graph their data using MS Excel. This lab will take approximately one month.
15 January - 15 March: Plant genetics and heredity Lab. Students will grow Brassica Rapa fast plants and collect data on average leaf, stem, and flower size. In the first generation, students will identify genotype and phenotypical traits. Students will cross pollinate their flowers to fertilize and learn the process of meiosis and mitosis in cell division. They will then harvest their seeds, replant the second generation and identify traits that have been passed on. This lab will take approximately two months.
