First Quarter Assignments
1. What is Science? Paper. Students will write a one page, double spaced, 12-14 font paper with title and name about what they think science is and how it affects their lives. Date assigned: 8/29/12; Date due: 9/4/12; 25 points.
2. Lab - Battle of the Drink Mixes. Students will learn the Scientific Method and use measurement skills to perform this lab in class. Students will also create a data table in MS Word and analyze their data. Date assigned: 9/5/12; Date completed: 9/10/12; 50 points.
3. 7th Grade Science Test Chapter 1 The Nature of Science on www.quia.com/web. Students will take this test in class using the classroom laptops. Date assigned: 11-12 Sep. 160 points.
4. Lab Journal Writing Check. The purpose of this assignment is to insure students are writing notes required on topics from class, and also the recording all the required procedures and observations from lab. Date assigned: 11-12 Sep. 25 Points.
5. Investigate Super-Absorbent Polymers Lab - Journal entries. Students will participate in this lab and be required to write down the steps of the Scientific Method as they complete their Lab. Students use MS Word to make their data table, and also used MS Excel to create their graphs, analyze their data, and make their conclusions. Date assigned: 13-19 Sep. 50 points.

10. Measuring Temperature Lab. Students will be using Vernier Probeware technology to take a variety of temperatures of various materials. Students will create data tables and graph their data. Students will use the software graphical user interface to see how temperature is graphed over time on the computer or handheld Labquest Interface. Date assigned: 24-27 Sep. 50 points.

13. Pace Yourself Lab Journal Grade. In this lab, students used measured distance and time running and walking on the high school track. They used the equation for Speed=Distance/Time to calculate their speeds. Students wrote the steps of the Scientific Method in their journals, their observations, and data in their data tables. Students then made data tables in MS Word, and then graphed their data using MS Excel. Date assigned: 2-10 Oct. 50 Points.
