Science Lab
Students will experience, explore, and discover science through my many scientific labs conducted during the year. Students will be given Laboratory Contract at the beginning of the year in which they will read and sign that they will abide by the safety rules in my science lab. Students who violate those rules, exhibit negative classroom behavior, or do not complete their homework assignments on time, will not be allowed to participate in the next lab. Students who have not completed their homework assignments on time will be completing their assignments in class while responsible students will be working in the lab. They are as follows:
Prepare for the Lab
1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks will not be tolerated.
2. Never eat, drink, chew gum, or taste anything in the science lab.
3. Study laboratory procedures before beginning the lab.
4. Never perform unauthorized experiments.
5. Treat all chemicals, equipment, supplies, and other materials with care and respect.
a. Do not remove any of these from the science lab.
b. Do not touch any of these without permission from the Mr. Hanson.
c. Never cut any material towards you - always cut away from your body.
d. Always carry a microscope, or equipment, with both hands.
6. Keep your work area neat, clean, and clutter free. Bring onlly your science journal, worksheets, textbook, and writing instruments to the work area.
7. Learn where the safety equipment is located and how to use it. Know where the exits are located and what to do in case of an emergency or fire drill.
Dress for the Lab
1. Tie back long hair.
2. Do not wear loose/baggy clothing or dangling jewelry on lab days.
3. Wear shoes with tops (no flip-flops or sandals).
4. Wear protective clothing (lab aprons, safety glasses, etc.) when instructed. Never remove these items during an experiment. There will be no
exceptions to this rule.
Avoid contact with Chemicals
1. Do not touch or smell any chemicals unless you're told to do so.
2. Never taste any chemical or draw materials in a pipette with your mouth.
3. When heating substances in a test tube, point the mouth (top) away from people.
4. Never carry dangerous chemicals or hot equipment near other people.
